An OID (Object Identifier) represents a node in a hierarchically assigned name space which is defined by the ASN.1 standard. Each node is clearly identified through a sequence of numbers indicating the node's position starting at the root of the tree. The root node of a MIB file (Management Information Base) is "iso,org.dod.internet". This name corresponds to the OID 1.3.6.1.

New nodes for own use can be requested from the respective authorities of the next higher node. The rules for the allocation and registration of OIDs are specified in the standards ISO/IEC 9834 and DIN 66334. The management of the OID tree and the guarantee for the uniqueness of OIDs are based on the transfer of jurisdiction for the subordinate nodes to the owner of an OID.

The node "iso.org.dod.internet.private.enterprises", respectively 1.3.6.1.4.1, represents the node that enables companíes to add their own contents to a MIB file. The subsequent node indicates the name of the company. 1.3.6.1.4.1.641, for example, is the node of Lexmark. If the OID of a device is queried via SNMP, the device returns the value stored under this OID:
