Do you trust this printer?

Description of the problem

When connecting a printer via the steadyPRINT Agent or the Windows “Devices and Printers” view, we receive the message “Do you trust this Printer?”. Users who are not administrator or main user of the concerned computer cannot install the printer. Is there a way to disable this message?

Solution

The message “Do you trust this Printer” appears since Windows Vista due to the Windows Point-and-Print restriction. It should be avoided that users improvidently install printer drivers on the computer and thus possibly cause damage.

You can find the necessary group policy settings for disabling the query under computer configuration/policies/administrative templates/printer/Point-and-Print restrictions. By activating the policy and selecting the option “Don’t show warning or elevation prompt”, you avoide messages being shown during driver installation and update. Alternatively, you can completely disable Point-and-Print restrictions.

After the re-login to the system, the user can install the printer without the query described above. The policy itself including all settings is provided in the Windows registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Printers\PointAndPrint.
